Ah, the small of a new book!

Hot off the press in October and hand delivered to the bookstore today...The Eastern Question...a book written by local resident Ted Danforth and edited by his wife, Nan. Ten years in the works, The Eastern Question follows the geopolitical dynamics of the Middle East for the past three millennia to todays current situation. A fascinating read for those of us with questions as to how and why we are where we are with the Middle East...and written so we can understand it! Great maps and cartoonish drawings make this book a fun read about a serious subject. Art "help" was given by another local, Sue Siskin! Sale proceeds have been generously donated back to the bookstore...thank you very much Ted and Nan! Books go out tomorrow, Monday, and will sell for 300 pesos! We love you both, Stephanie | ------------------------Re: Ah, the small of a new book!

I am interested in various perspectives on the history of the middle East (as opposed to "Eastern" which could include SE Asia, China etc). And the description of the manner in which the material is presented intrigues me. I will not be in LM this winter. Is there any way to get an edition in the US? | ------------------------Re: Ah, the small of a new book!

The book is titled, The Eastern Question. Copies are available either at your local, indie bookstore or through Amazon. If you want to learn more about the book, check out the website, www.easternquestion.com. There are BUY links on the website. "The Eastern Question" was a 19th century term referring to which of the colonial powers, as opposed to Russia who was also interested, would get the territories of the Ottoman Empire when it broke up. The "Question" was supposedly answered at the end of WWI, but today's containing conflicts in the lands of the former Ottoman Empire are a reminder that the question is still very much in play. | ------------------------Re: Ah, the small of a new book!

Yes...I would think your local independent bookstore could order one for you. They are also available through Amazon...but I like independent better! Thanks for your interest and not mentioning that I should have written "smell" instead of "small"! | ------------------------Re: Ah, the small of a new book!

I am about 30 pages into it and am glad I got a copy. While I'm glad there won't be a test at the end I have to pass, it provides some great insight into the conundrum we find in the midst of our life having to do with the Middle East. It is also a fun read. | ------------------------ |
