Humans of La Manzanilla: Irene

You may have seen this hard-working woman on the beach where she lives at the mouth of the lagoon. Irene (pronounced 'Ee-RAY-nay') came to La Manz in 1962 - a 16-year old girl from a small village in the highlands of Jalisco. She began working for the Rodriguez family, on their coconut plantation on the beach just beyond the cocodrilario. Irene has 4 children of her own, and also raised two others, in addition to 17 grandchildren.

Irene had a very sad experience. I don't know the whole story, and someone can correct me if I am wrong. She inherited the land next to the cocodrilos and she established a wonderful "wild" camping where I stayed when I came to La Manzanilla. Then, a land grubber contested her ownership and after a long fought battle, she was sent to jail for a few days, or months. Finally she was able to obtain redress and got back the piece of land where she is now. She makes a living by allowing people to camp next to her "restaurant". She deserves our support. | ------------------------
