Ticks on our dog

Our dog has lots of little ticks, some of which are engorged. I've pulled lots off. Anyone else had this problem? And does the Farmacia sell something that will kill them? | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

You would do your dogs, and yourself, a favour by getting to the vet A.S.A.P. Treating with either Frontline or Revolution protects against ticks, fleas, and heart worm. The greatest threat to your dog's health, here in La Manz, is the ticks which carry erlychia (sp). Check it out online; it is not a disease you want your dog to get. Additionally, those ticks may transfer to you (I have had three attach to me in the past two weeks, before I got Rev. For the dogs), and, although one doctor says there is no Lyme disease here, another says it is present though not common. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

There is a really good product by Merck available in Melaque at Beto's called Bravecto. It is a 12 week pill and is expensive, but it works. I am suspicious of the side effects of Frontline. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

Am presently being treated with antibiotics for lymes--have had ticks from down here in recent years----but also from bush whacking in northern climes----so can't say for sure if I got it here abouts, but have been told it is down this way? Steve | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog P.S.

Also please go online to find our how to kill ticks. Squashing them is not an option as they exude something which is not good for any of us; flushing them is not effective. I pull them off and drop them into a small amount of rubbing alcohol (though vodka, gin, and tequila are also effective--wasteful, but effective). My research also warns against removing them with bare hands as whatever poisons they exude can get onto us right then--I do bare hands, though it know I shouldn't. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog P.S.

Thanks. We are taking her to the vet. I've removed at least 50 and she is a small dog (6.5 lbs). I squished them all between my thumb and forefinger which is what I do with ticks on horses at home. Don't think I could put them in Tequilla but we have rum I wouldn't mind using. She had Revolution before we left and there's a dose waiting at home. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog P.S.

We have had great success with a Bayer product called Seresto. It's a collar that has prevented any tick or fleas for a good eight to nine months. The collars aren't cheap but you can order them through Amazon. Before we got the collar our pup was having a daily tick check especially in the ears. Great product as far as I'm concerned (plus it doesn't stink like other collars). | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog P.S.

We have been coming to La Manz for over 12 years, staying six months... With our dog. Last 'spring' was the first time we experienced these 'dog ticks'. I know that's what they are as I took a vial of 'samples' back to our vet and the lab confirmed what they were Dog Ticks, and did not have any harm to humans nor Lyme disease. Tick like to hang on the edges of grass and low lying bushes, in the morning, like dew. They wait for a dog to wander by, and attach to the fur. I have used K9 advantik on my dog dor 17 years with no adverse side affects. frontline is similar, but I think perhaps an American version, might be a stronger product. You have to apply very four weeks, not five, not five and a half. Our problem last year was that I was lax in applying, and missed a month... And then the ticks thrived. The K9 works in the dog's blood stream, and kills tick and larvae. As soon as I put it on, within 24 hours, the ticks and larvae dropped off dead. If I find a tick on my dog, I use tweezers to remove and wash the area with alcohol wipe. You can use soap and water. I take my dog out in the morning on a leash, and try not to let him near wet grass etc. I check him almost three or four times a day for ticks, brush him, cut his hair, and bath him at least every two weeks. I use Bolfo shampoo, from vet in Melaque. I Check the dog bedding, and floors very day, and it seems to work. Vacuuming the floors is the best thing, but sweeping and washing daily is advised. Use vinegar, baking soda, and strong floor soap works well. Clorox does not kill ticks or fleas. Watch where your dog walks, avoid bush along roads... And check and groom constantly. Good Luck!

With ticks its important to apply heat ( a cigarette close to the ticks back end for example ) to get him to release his bite and back off . The last thing you want to do is squeeze the ticks body injecting fluids into the wound or pull the tick off leaving parts of its head or jaws in the wound to become infected . This works well on humans ..... on dogs probably too if you can get them to stay still . Good Hunting ! | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

We took our dog to the vet in Melaque and got Bravecto. One pill cost 525 pesos and lasts 12 weeks. We've bathed her, fumigated her bed and kennel and removed at least 100 ticks! She could get erlichosis which can be detected by a blood test. I had taken her for a long walk which included areas with tall grass. Thanks everyone. Check your dogs - the ticks look like small dark specks, about the size of a pin head before they start to engorge. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

When I was a kid in the hills of So. Cal., my sister and I would ring the tick with Vasaline, then wait a minute and pull gently. They need air and will back out to get some!

I now give my dog Bravecto after him having a very bad reaction to Frontline Plus. He had a seizure and sensitivity to the site where the product was applied. The sensitivity has reduced but has left him with hair loss and where the new hair is growing in it is a darker color. I am hoping all the hair will grow back. I had another dog that contracted erlichia even though he had been given frontline plus. It is a nasty disease - if he had not been a big strong dog we would have lost him. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

Hi I am a small animal vet in Victoria - I have been in LM for the last 2 weeks with my small dog - Chihuahua. byway - Bravecto is the safest, most cost effective, and effective product ever to hit the market. I cannot stress enough all the benefits of it. Anyway we walk daily (up hills,to the waterfall etc) and not a tick on her. worth every penny to prevent tick borne diseases (Lyme, Erlichiosis, Babesia and others!)

Tick removal, based on years of research due to living with tick borne illness' the current word is get the damn things off as quickly and completely as possible. Any smothering or heating with match simply puts them in stress and the release a plethora of toxins into their host - so they say, tweezers, get as close to surface as possible, remove quickly and then inspect to ascertain whether or not complete body has been removed. This is for all hosts (and yes, I wish I knew far less about these horrible pests). | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

Thank you, Heidi for this comment. It's so nice to hear from a respected NOB Vet that this is a quality and effective product. We are off to Melaque to try to find it for Zinkie. He has been plagued by ticks this year even though we use Frontline on him regularly. This board continues to be a fountain of useful information. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

Hi Heidi, Thanks for your input, I'll be getting some bravecto. Do you agree with a previous poster that one shouldn't squish the tick after pulling it out with tweezers? I find it so satisfying....TIA, Cat. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

I just got back from Beto's and he charged me $640 pesos for Bravecto!!! Must be New Year's inflation. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

I am curious what size you purchased because I paid 720 pesos for the dosage for xlg breed also from Beto. | ------------------------Re: Ticks on our dog

So, as I actually suspected, it is priced by dosage. The $640 was for 500 mg for Medium Sized Dogs. | ------------------------Ticks on our dog

The treatment we use is: Revolution which is reasonably priced monthly topical heartworm and flea prevention in a single application. Prevents heartworm disease Kills fleas & flea eggs Kills ticks in dogs Kills roundworms & hookworms in cats Treats & controls ear mites My thought is that the more treated, the better the drug. | ------------------------Bravecto

I just picked up this new product at Beto's in Melaque (El Granero), and will be trying it out for the first time. I am sharing here some info which may be helpful to others. They were out of the smallest dosage, the one for my Chihuahua (3 Kilos). I opted to buy the next size up and give 1/4 tab at the proscribed 3 month intervals. If this works, it will be a big savings. I do have concerns about keeping the product "fresh" as it needs to be kept in an airtight container, so suggest you ask your vet if you choose to go this route. 1 dose, small dog = 520p 4 doses, 10-20k dogs (1 year) = 640p
