musty cupboard solution?
Posted by Dhyana Bartkow on January 5, 2016, 9:50 pm
The wooden clothes armoire and dresser in my rental house doesn't seem to be used until I come here for 3 months. It smells mouldy when I just come near it, let alone open it, so I have no where to put my things (I'm very sensitive/allergic to mould). Has anyone found a solution for treating mustiness in closed spaces in the tropics? | ------------------------Re: musty cupboard solution?

When I was living aboard my wood-interior sail boat, I used to use a water/vinegar solution - yes, the boat smelled like a french fry for a day or two each month, but it was worth it to get rid of the old and smell. | ------------------------Re: musty cupboard solution?

Get a spray bottle 'botella para espray' - saw one at Chiyo's but maybe Lidia has them too. Mix 10% dilution of Cloro with water, spray the inside of everything and let dry thoroughly. | ------------------------Re: musty cupboard solution?

You can also spray essential oils, like lemon, lime, or orange (the citrus ones are best for deal with mold) instead of chemicals or bleach if you like and it smells a heck of a lot better. Jennifer sells oils at her store across from the delegados office on Tamarindo street. Linda Mandala

i wonder if the large bowl of charcoal mentioned in a difference post to get rid of a musty smell in a car would work in this situation. | ------------------------Re: musty cupboard solution?

I once rented a house with a very musty smelling couch and my dear old mother suggested a piece of burnt log ( charcoal) underneath. It worked great. | ------------------------
