Just wondering if anyone has gone to see the butterflies from here by bus. How many days, bussing it, hotels? Any info would be appreciated. I know there are organized tours but we are wanting to do it on our own. Thanks. | ------------------------Re: Monarch Butterflies

I went in 2008. I believe its about one day to LaZaro Cardenas, one day to Zitacuaro (I did an overnight bus). Zitacuaro is a cool town. I recall there being a direct shuttle from there in the high season, there's also a local bus that takes you to the entrance of the mariposa reserve. about a mile/half mile from the park. Once at the park you'll want to talk to someone, follow someone or connect with a guide. I walked around aimlessly for a long while until I found some local guide folks who knew which sectoin of the forest they were in at that time. LC is a port city - cuidado. Michoacan has historically been a relatively dangerous place... I've heard some sketchy stories, but, seeing the butterflies made me cry. It was stunning! | ------------------------Re: Monarch Butterflies

My wife and I drove to a town called angangeo,3000 meters above sea leaves,it was cold, frost on the ground,in the morning, old mining town from the 18 hundreds, spectacular place, and the butterfly's,a thing of rare beauty, my point is,no mater how you go,bring warm cloths, the hotel room had fire place, but did not throw off much heat because of the thin air, the experience is one off the wonders of this world,so no mater how you go,go.salud. | ------------------------Re: Monarch Butterflies

It's a long ride, Evelyn, and so 2 years ago my mother and I went with Dan at Mex-Eco Tours, located in Melaque. Here's his link: www.ex-ecotours.com and his phone number is 355-7027. It was a wonderful tour and included a walking tour of Morelias. Enjoy! | ------------------------Re: Monarch Butterflies

We visited the Monarch butterflies November 2014. Zitacuaro is a good central location to target. The two more visited sites are at Angangueo / El Campo are 30-40 minutes away. We went to ejido village of Macheros (Cerro Pelon) and stayed at a B and B. see attached link: http://jmbutterflybnb.com/ At any of the sites you are guided from the common access point (parking lot) to the butterflies. An off site "guided tour" gets you to the common access point (gate) from where the local guide takes over. To get there we flew in/ out of Mexico City and took bus from / to Zitacuaro (200 pesos & 2 hours ride). Return, we flew via Interjet from Mexico City to Manzanillo (approx. $120 US). The butterflies were at about 10,000 feet in altitude. We opted to have horses for the climb from Macheros (8,500 feet - just under 2 hour climb on horseback).
