HD Video by artist Chris Welsby: 2015, La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico.
Duration 37minutes
The video material for this piece was shot amongst the Ruins of the Hotel Bahia De Tenicatita, on the afternoon of January 10th 2015
Introduction
The medium is video, but the work is made for the art gallery and not for the cinema or television. It is closely related to painting, but here, light takes the place of pigment and time is an extension of pictorial space. Merleau-Ponty writing about Cézanne makes the connection better than I can ever hope to do “…..when the overall composition of the picture is seen globally, perspectival distortions are no longer visible in their own right but rather contribute, as they do in natural vision, to impression of an emerging order, an object in the act of appearing, organizing itself before our eyes."
The following is an extract from my own production notes written to accompany the final project, which premiered in Stockholm Sweden in December 2015.
Notes
The camera viewpoint shifts constantly as if looking for something amongst the rubble and broken palm fronds. Texture and detailed emerge from the swirling pastel hues of light and shade. Sometimes, architectural detail will materialise on the surface, at other times the bright uncompromising colours of graffiti dominate the frame. Using some rapid camerawork and crash editing the hard edges and assertive colours of gang tags along with less formalized declarations of sexual pleasure, love and death are folded into the same passing stream of dancing pixels and the rapidly changing focus of the moving image.
The ruins, look solid enough, but look a little closer: rivers of silt and minor avalanches of grit everywhere tell us that the hotel is now gaining momentum and, as it continues on it’s inevitable descent back to into earth we are perhaps reminded that nothing is permanent except change itself.
Thanks
Thanks to all of you who responded to my questions about the hotel and it's history.
I am grateful to Nansee for this opportunity to bring the project back to La Manzanilla. I will attend the screening to give a brief introduction to the work and I will also be there to answer questions afterwards.
