I spoke with one of the local trash collectors and it seems that collection has been interrupted because of a larg fire at the dump near Emmiliano Zapata. Thus the haze and bad air quality of the past week, and the various posts about a large fire visible at night to the north. The fire was started by someone clearing land along the highway near the dump. La Huerta sent fire trucks to suppress the blaze, but to no avail. It is still smoldering and occasionally flairing up and will probably do so until we get some rain. The last time this happened was maybe 5 years ago, before they moved it to the east side of the highway and further out of public view. I remember it burned for about a month or more. The basurero explained that it is hard to dump the trash because of the moving hot spots and that they are collecting the minimal until the fire has diminished. This is according to one of the senior garbage men. :-(
