And for those asking about “Ackee” in Sunday’s special Jamaican Codfish & Ackee, it is the national fruit of Jamaica, and ackee and saltfish is the national dish. Ackee and Codfish is ranked number two in the world by National Geographic survey of national dishes.
The Jamaican ackee tree grows up to 60 feet. The ackee fruit is a red, yellow or orange pod-like capsule, 2-4 inches long, with 3 cream colored arils, each tipped with a black seed. Fruiting is at about 4 years.
The firm and oily aril is the edible portion and is consumed fresh or is cooked and used as a vegetable.
This delicacy is enjoyed by many at breakfast, or as a Jamaican ackee treat. The canned product is exported to ethnic markets worldwide and continues to be enjoyed by both visitors to the island and Jamaicans residing overseas.
Nutritional value: contains dietary fiber, calcium, iron, potassium, sodium, zinc, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, and vitamin C. Indeed, a healthy dish!
