I have invited my niece to visit me in La Manzanilla in Feb. She is trying to get pregnant and wanted me to ask if the Zika virus is present down there. I did a search and it sounds like there were a few cases during the summer, but wonder if there are any cases during this time of year. Have any of the locals had any problems with Zika or has it affected any babies born in the area? I know there is talk of a "conspiracy theory" and I have read that information during August emails. Right now I am looking for some facts. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have heard of at least 3 cases recently, 2 in the past 3 weeks. It was not confirmed by blood tests but verbally by the local doctor. I would stay home if I were hoping to get pregnant.

I too have had Zika, within 2 weeks of my arrival in La Manzanilla in October, and it lasted over a week. Not fun. And definitely not a good idea to be exposed if you're pregnant, or trying to get pregnant. A friend of mine here had it just a couple of weeks ago. I've read that some people get it and don't even know they have it, as they have no symptoms. I had the rash, headache, sore joints, etc etc.

I contracted Zika in July. At that time, the clinic doc told me that she had been seeing 10 patients a week with the virus. As it is easy to diagnose from the symptoms, particularly the distinctive rash, most people do not spend the money to get the lab test that is needed for reporting. So, the number of cases are grossly underreported. Better safe than sorry - do not visit if trying to get pregnant.

Myself and three other friends had it last month, didn't a lab test to diagnose it. Had all the symptoms. I wonder how many cases there really have been , as most people don't report it. My self included.5146

In regards to your pregnancy concern here are a couple links to consider.
February 2016 report by Physicians in the Crop-Sprayed Town
2. A dramatic increase of congenital malformations, especially microcephaly in newborns, was detected and quickly linked to the Zika virus by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. However, they fail to recognise that in the area where most sick persons live, a chemical larvicide producing malformations in mosquitoes has been applied for 18 months, and that this poison (pyroproxyfen) is applied by the State on drinking water used by the affected population.
3. Previous Zika epidemics did not cause birth defects in newborns, despite infecting 75% of the population in those countries. Also, in other countries such as Colombia there are no records of microcephaly; however, there are plenty of Zika cases.
Scientists are bewildered by Zika’s path across Latin America - October 25, 2016
"According to the latest U.N. figures, of the 2,175 babies born in the past year with undersize heads or other congenital neurological damage linked to Zika, more than 75 percent have been clustered in a single region: northeastern Brazil. The pattern is so confounding that health officials and scientists have turned their attention back to northeastern Brazil to understand why Zika’s toll has been so much heavier there. They suspect that other, underlying causes may be to blame, such as the presence of another mosquito-borne virus like chikungunya or dengue. Or that environmental, genetic or immunological factors combined with Zika to put mothers in the area at greater risk".

I had the rash and headaches last week but no zika antigens in blood. The blood tests not always accurate. A friend had the zika antigens in blood test , same week. I am still tired but other symptoms gone.

Hi! Is the Zika virus still currently in La Manzanilla and its surrounding towns? Me and my family will be arriving in a couple weeks and i am about 10 weeks pregnant right now. I'm reading a lot about the birth defects concerning Zika. I've talked with a few different travelers who were recently there and some said they saw absolutely no mosquitoes and some said they were only bitten at night. I'm under the understanding that Zika virus is from mosquitoes that bite more during the daytime. Have there been issues with daytime mosquitoes? Can some please fill me in on current conditions? Thank you

A friend of mine was diagnosed with zika virus in late december. Rashes , headaches and sore body . I had the same symptoms but no zika virus in my blood. The blood tests are somewhat not reliable. I think i had it. With rest and diet, platelets count went up after a week.Rashes disappear so do headaches. When do mosquitoes bite? different opinions on that. That all i can say.
