Another sold out house and what a special literary night it was. 5,250 pesos raised for our community (7,450 total for the Spoken Word Charity Series). 2,100 to Edwardo (an accident victim), 2,100 into The Dave Sullins Memorial Art Fund, and 1,050 for The Sanitary System Project. Thanks again to all who made it special. The Artists; Linda Crosfield, Denise Brown, myself, Anne Wheeler, and Alice Walker. To the volunteers; Melody, Gail, Dennis, Brittany, and Ed. To David D.; for forthcoming photos we hope. And to Nansee; for the lovely Venue. Not yet sure what we will do next year but most likely the same; One Open Mic, One StorySlam, and One Invitational. A reminder: Of The Scholarship Student Art Show this Saturday, the 25th, from 5 to 7 at the LCF Complex behind the Kinder. The students will hang their own show and price their own works of art. Thanks for a memorable season. Ron
Thanks for the summary of this marvelous evening, Ron, and thanks to the participants who evoked so many emotions in the audience. Splendid work . . . touching and thought provoking by turns. Additionally, I thank you, Ron, for the many ways in which you enrich this community . . . promoting the visual arts and the written word, and supporting the various segments of La Manz which are in need of financial help.
It was an outstanding night of poetry and story-telling - we won't forget it!
I have more photos but I will post one now of Denise Brown reading her piece, which had everyone spellbound. The first time I have seen a standing ovation at a poetry reading...it was stunning. Thanks to everyone who made this event possible
For those who wished to see my early documentary films...go to nfb.ca and you will find several there including AUGUSTA. Keep the stories going - thanks to everyone who helped make this such a success.
Anne Wheeler's story of how she made a film with native elder Augusta was wonderful. I loved her simply descriptive prose and her 'cut to the heart of it' way of storytelling. Here's a photo of her telling the tale:
Ron Stock's story poems were evocative, and sometimes funny. Here's a photo of him telling the tale of a hair-raising taxi ride in Colombia:
Linda Crosfield read from her book of poetry - we enjoyed her personal accounts that often have a humourous touch:
Alice Walker brought very recent writing - she talked about how depressing it is to have 'Number 45’ in office now, and we remember her advice of what to do in the meantime: 1 - Meditate more, 2 - Dance more, and 3 - get your bad news from the comedians on television.
