As you know the gym was donated to the community by Cyndi Coates and Robert Rhodes, daughter and son-in-law of La Manzanilla resident Cruz. The gym has one fulltime employee, a women named Malena, and several instructors year-round. During the winter there are expats who also teach at the gym. Because of Cyndi and Robert’s continued support, full-time residents can be members of the gym for only 220 pesos a month. Many women and young adults take advantage of the gym, its weights, machines, and classes. It’s been a wonderful addition to the community and given many, women especially, a chance to pursue healthy and fun activities like working out! Many of the women still have to ask permission from their husbands to go to the gym. Because the gym has a good reputation, men feel comfortable letting their wives come and workout. This was not always the case and it took a while for the men to come around. Many of you are probably shaking your heads in disbelief, but as a former instructor at the gym I have firsthand knowledge with this subject!
As you can image, memberships of 220 pesos a month do not cover the cost to keep the gym open, pay the manager, instructors, rent, maintain the equipment, and this year hopefully a new palapa to replace the one damaged by Patricia. But 220 pesos is all many can afford to pay. Hence, we have to have fundraisers to offset the costs. So, after this long prelude here are the details for the Kris Kringle Market.
