Itís been an exciting two weeks for me since Iíve arrived to La Huerta Escolar. I jumped right in and havenít stopped since. When I found out about this project and this town, I felt like it was a perfect match. Iíve been thrilled to find out that my hunch was right. Thank you to everyone who has been so welcoming.
As a social worker and community organizer, youth leadership is the goal in all the work I do. I believe youth ownership of a space, a mission, a community is the key to sustainability. I know when a community rallies around the youth and the youth know theyíre in the lead, amazing things can happen.
So with that, a few updates from Snr Huerta on La Huerta:
-Weíve launched a Saturday employment program for the youth most interested in the mission and work of La Huerta. This Saturday will be our 2nd work day. Any produce you buy at this point will directly fund putting the youth into positions of leadership.
-Antonio is leading an expansion project that will be vital for the financial sustainability of the garden. Over the next month, we will be fundraising for the preparation of a new section of the land for the planting of bananas, piŮas, and other highly valued produce.
-Save the date: 10/02/2018 we will be hosting a festival and fundraising dinner at the garden catered by Muy Rico. All proceeds from this event will be directed towards preparing the new banana field. Tickets on sale soon!
