Hola, Dean. Sorry, but too long a story for tonight. But what we do want to say is that the process of legalizing/nationalizing of foreign vehicles (but not from Japan or Germany) is opening up again to groups such as Onappafa.
In a couple of months, possibly sooner, Onappafa will be able to do the transactions that will give you Mexican plates for your cars or trucks. This is great for people that want to travel wherever in Mexico in their own vehicles. With the Onappafa Farm plates you are only legal to travel in Jalisco or Nayarit. And you need to renew them each year.
Anyway, you may want to see Carlos at Bahia Azul with your questions about nationalizing your vehicle.
I'll answer you, Dean, later. Sleep tight, Cruz

If you legalized your vehicle with ONAPPAFA...I would like to know how difficult the procedure was and if you would do it again. Can it be done on a tourist visa?I would like to drive down in November and be able to leave the vehicle. My understanding is the vehicle would not be legal outside of Jalisco and Nayarit.
Hola, Mike. As I recall, from a slightly clouded memory, that Legalizing my vehicle was fairly easy and uncomplicated to do. I would recommend it to anyone.
My only problem came later after all the Onappafa paperwork was completed. Because I had legalized a diesel vehicle it had to be driven to Puerto Vallarta for inspection before I could get the plates. All other vehicles are inspected in Autlan.
Thanks to my friend, Dan, who drove the truck for me, the trip wasn't bad. We just couldn't locate the shop. Thank you for shaking up the memory of my friend for me.
But next, I think you have the two processes mixed up somewhat. One is 'legalization' and you can go anywhere in Mexico after getting your plates. This happens after you do your Onappafa paperwork. Then you go to Autlan for inspection and then you go to the vehicle registration office in La Huerta to pay and get your plates.
The other is the temporary use of 'Farm (foam) plates' which allows you to toodle around in Jalisco and Nayarit. These you renew with Onappafa each year until you decide to go the full route and 'Legalization'.
I hope I was somewhat clear, Cruz
PS: I'll get back to you on the immigration status question.
