best way back to Ottawa

For the first time we are driving back to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We have been given two choices.
1. leaving Guadalajara to Monterrey and crossing at Laredo.
2. Leaving Guadalajara to San Luis Potosi, Ciudad Victoria crossing at Brownsville.

Would appreciate any comments. We also need hotel suggestions for a small dog.
