I just saw an absolutely fascinating program on CNN. A study was done of small children -- 4 and 5 years of age -- asking them to point out (among a group of figures with the same face in different colors) who was the person they wanted as a friend, who was smart, who was dumb, etc. Unbelievably and tragically, an overwhelming number of these small children, chose the blackest face for the dumbest and the whitest face for all the positive relationships and perceptions. Black children also had prejudices, but they were less dramatic percentage-wise, i.e. a smaller bias toward whites. The same intelligent black woman who had conducted the study, mentioned in passing that as children age, even in integrated schools they choose to self-segregate, something she averred should not be allowed to happen.

So, I am rethinking my reaction to the elimination of the ethnic studies programs in Arizona, thinking that perhaps another way is even better to ensure that kids are given opportunities to form interracial friendships, learn about other cultures, etc.
