Irene's gone but remnants remain

The Hudson river in Nyack NY surged over a 4 ft. high fence, which is about 6 feet above normal river level. One boat flipped over and sank and another boat wound up with the dock on top of it. Lots of downed limbs, roads closed, flooding, power outages, etc. Luckily it didn't hit NYC head on, but parts of the suburbs and surrounding states (especially Vermont) got so much rain (up to 12" in one day!) that flooding is definitely a major problem. It was 55 F degrees last night (unheard of for August in NY) and a beautiful 65 now - the air is dry and clear, everything looks clean and sparkly. Some say that government officials over reacted, but of course if they hadn't made so many preparations and it had hit NYC with more force, people would have complained that the officials didn't do enough to prepare. I say, better safe than sorry! |
