Many people don't know this, but in North America, most of the glass bottles that are recycled are simply crushed into "cullet", creating sand grains of various sizes that are then mostly used for sandblasting, or in the creation of fiberglass insulation. Enormous quantities of energy are required to melt down and reform glass containers, so the cheapest use is to grind it into sand again - what it started out as! |
