Speaking from my own experience, I wouldn't drive. The great adventure of packing kids and dogs in the van and the fun of driving to Mexico has been greatly diminished by the cartels. We were in a narco blockade near Las Varas and didn't realize it until later. We were very naive, and glad we didn't have anything they wanted. I guess the Ford F350 Crewcab with rickety camper showed it's treeplanter history and was more beat-up than they want. Nothing else of value either: no computer, money, jewellery, so I figure they realized we were broker than they were. http://www.borderlandbeat.com/2012/02/mexican-cartel-strategic-note-no-12.html In my opinion they are becoming much more violent as turf wars develop. I feel safe in La Manzanilla and am glad there is a military post in Melaque. |
