We drive this route every year.

Use the truck bypass border crossing at Nogales, not the downtown one. Road is generally good south to Tepic, but be alert at all times. You can avoid the worst winding mountain section from Tepic to PV By leaving the toll road at the exit for San Blas and then drive down the coast road until you merge with the main highway again at La Varela.

The toll road north of Tepic most of the way to Mazatlan has new surface and is in excellent condition. Heading north from LM a month ago I took that stretch at 85-95 MPH.

To give you an idea of the minimum driving time; we went LM to Mazatlan on Day 1, Mazatlan to Hermasillo on Day 2. We crossed the border going north at Naco, across from Bisbee, AZ on Day 3. There is no wait to cross there and no hassles. However, they have recently cut back hours for the Banamex there from Thursday 4PM until Sunday 4PM only - if you need to get your car deposit back.
