cancellation of citibank usa

Posted by stephanie on May 27, 2014, 4:31 pm

Wow...just got a notice that Citibank USA will no longer be working with Banamex...as in they will be cancelling these accounts as of mid-June.

For the past 12 years I have had this account and feed it through my Bank of America account in Calif. So does anyone know of another bank here in Melaque that works with BofA and can have funds sent directly here?

Any assistance would be great as I have limited time here to set up an account and make sure all is running somoothly.

Thanks in advance, Stephanie

Well...we have a Banamex USA account that I transfer money to from my BofA account. We avoid ATM transfer fees when using the Banamex ATM in Mexico. Also Santander ( which is in Manzanillo) does not charge an ATM when withdrawing from a BofA account.

Thanks Sparks..the rep I talked with today said he was fielding lots of questions from angry folks who were being cancelled.

Seems Intercam might be the right fit! Anyone with experience using them? Someone just told me you set up an account, write them a check from your Stateside bank and can have the money deposited in your banamex account within a couple of hours.

Would love to hear other's stories...thanks, S

I don't know about a deposit to Banamex. They used to give you a bank draft you could deposit or cash.

To open an account you write a check, takes about 3 days, they took pictures of my house (under construction) ..... I got an email when money was ready.

After that just write a check. Cost is like $9 per check and the exchange rate they give you. Can write checks for several thousand dollars.

Intercam Deposits to Banamex

hey Stephanie...Michael & I have been using Intercam for 3 years, and yes, we write checks directly off our CA bank acct...and they transfer the money into our Banamex acct within 30 minutes--one hour tops. NO complaints from us what's so ever; actually their transactions are the easiest we've e.v.e.r encountered in the 10 years we've had a house in Mexico. Ask Montana Dave more about Intercam as he transfers money from the US to them all the time. We opened the same acct that Dave has but have yet to transfer any money down.

Good luck and hope all is well with you (does this count as one of our encounters??? LOL)

Hey Stephanie, Intercam in Melaque is wonderful. All you will need is to open an account - bring your passport and a utility bill. Then you can cash a U.S. check and either deposit it to your Banamex account or get cash up to $500 USD in pesos. Your US check will not incur a foreign transaction fee because Intercam uses a U.S. clearing house directly in the USA. Intercam is also becoming a bank itself. If you go to Intercam, it is at the end of the street that the bank is on. The people are wonderful there and speak english (Tanya). Dave

Stephanie, Rolly Brook (long-time Mexico resident and expert) just posted this on Facebook:

"For BanamexUSA account holders:

For reasons the bank will not reveal, they have sent closure notices to several account holds that I have heard from. The notices say the accounts will be close on 30 June. No appeal possible.

After a sleepless night conjuring up various solutions if I should get the boot, I called BanamexUSA this morning and was relieved to learn that I am not on the hit list.

If you have an account with them, you might want to call to inquire about your status."

Hope this helps.

Yeah Intercam!!!!!! I must say I am very impressed with my new experience with them.

Three days ago I got my notice from Banamex Citibank. The following day I went to talk with Intercam and today I was able to transfer some money...and that took less than an hour.

Thanks to all who continue to send and share their stories. Greatly appreciated, Stephanie

Thanks to all of you who wrote here or called me!

Spent the morning setting up an account with the very nice folks at Intercam. I had all the necessary documents with me so was easy and fast.

A representative came to the house this afternoon and looks like the transfer can begin as early as Friday.

Again, thanks, Stephanie

This is an entertaining and mind opening read for anyone who isn't familiar with the writing of Matt Taibbi from Rolling Stone Magazine.

I've used my B of A card at Banco Santander ATMs, and while they don't charge a fee, they do charge 3% for currency conversion. That is not a good deal.
Much better is Schwab Bank who reimburses ATM fees no matter where you go. Schwab is an internet bank, and it's a bit fussy to get set up to do transfers in and out. Once set up, though, it's easy peasy.
Second best is our local credit union. Low fee, good conversion rate, and once again, you can use it anywhere.
