After reading the piece on Villalobos and hearing first hand of the people near Barra murdered for refusing to surrender their property to narcos is there any reason to own land there if you are a gringo like me? I am thinking now it's better to just visit and rent?

Unless you are well to do and can walk away from your investment , if you get old , or sick , or if safety in Mexico gets even crazier . You would be better off renting for a couple of years to better understand what it is exactly what you want. This is no easy undertaking , laws are becoming more restrictive and property maintenance and safety can become tricky ....at best . Good Luck on finding your dream retirement. Its a fabulous country for those who are informed .

Reasons to purchase

1. once the US economy improves, so with the value of land and homes in Mexico as there is a direct link
2. in my opinion, owning is a good long term investment, it is not for the light of heart and you should not invest more than you can afford to lose. Yes, there has been some very bad investments but there also has been many great investments in land and property.
3. You have to do your research and feel comfortable that where you are investing in, is the 'right' location and it is where you want to come back to year after year.
4. there is nothing wrong with renting but finding a good home at a good rate, year after year is sometimes difficult
5. La Manzanilla is a great community and I feel honoured to be a welcomed guest there, I have always felt safe and comfortable as I am sure many others have, renting will tell you what you want and don't want, so renting is probably the safest thing to do from the get go.

All in my opinion

Ditto on what Erin said.

I have had a home in La Manzanilla (LM) since 1995 and have never had any problems as stated by the person on the original post.

Viva Mexico, especially LM, my home!

Gracias!
