Hi All

Have a friend from Calgary staying here for a couple of days before he crosses into Mexico and continues down to Costa Rica.
Does anyone have knowledge of some informative wed sites for traveling there ? Current road conditions , safety , toll roads , immigration procedures , vehicle entry fees ...... anything that can help ! Thanks

Mexico , Guatemala , El Salvador , Nicaragua , Costa Rica

Shane:

I have driven in Nicaragua, El Salvador, (you left off Honduras)and Costa Rica.

I think it's the usual: don't drive at night and don't expect to make a lot of miles in the day. Keep your gas tank relatively full.

Nicaragua is especially dicey with corrupt police.

It would be wise to check on currency differences. While, I know El Salvador and Nicaragua accepts U.S. dollars, I'm not sure about Guatemala and Honduras.

That's all I know. Hope your friend has a safe, yet exciting, trip.

Thanks Mark
He lived in Guatemala for 5 years in the early 80`s , married, 3 kids , before moving back to Canada , so now he is looking for a place to retire .
Looking at a map he feels going through El Salvador might bypass Honduras .
Is there anything special he should know about the border crossings , tips , bribes the speed things through ?

Yes, he will have to go through Honduras to get to Costa Rica.

Like I said in my earlier email, the only dicey part of the main highway, to me, was in Nicaragua, where every cop had his hand out. In retrospect, because they did not have patrol cars I shouldn't have even stopped. But just waved and kept on going.

Tell your friend to check out the eastern part of El Salvador at Los Cucos, El Cocos, whatever. It's beautiful, cheap, miles of a level sand beach framed by palms. I assume your friend must speak Spanish if he lived in Guatemala, which would be necessary as there are no gringos in that part of El Salvador. The beach front land prices are incredibly inexpensive. My wife and I seriously considered retiring there, but we need a few more amenities (like a supermercado less than an hour away) in our old age.

I know that you have to pay a refundable fee crossing your care into Mexico, but I don't think that's the case in the Central American countries.

As for retiring in Costa Rica, my opinion is that it is too civilized.

As I said earlier, that's all I know!
