Having surfed since the early sixties, the best advice from this link was not to fight the current. When you can, swim parallel to the beach. |
Rip currents typically occur when the beach is next to a point or cape. What is, perhaps, more dangerour is when the beach is heavily sloped. Stay on level (more or less) beaches when you enter the water. Steep beaches have a natural undertow. Think Arroyo Seco.
