PLAYA LIMPIA SEWER UPDATE

Exciting news! 1 step forward in managing waste water in LaManzanilla. The Committee, along with LaHuerta, Morgan (water director), Fermin (mayor -"Delagado") and others, organized a repair on our one and only sewer pump, which had a leaky gasket and didn't have enough pressure to send black water to the treatment plant in Los Ingenos. Morgan hired a professional pump clean/repair company from Rebalsito, who provide facturas for their work. The boys set up a tripod, lifted the heavy pump out of the black water and set it on the walk grate. Morgan got the new gasket and bolts from LaHuerta. The boys cleaned the joint, replaced the gasket and tested the now-strong water pressure and lowered the pump down. We watched the black water level go down quickly. Many THANKS to those who have donated money to pay for the first part of Playa Limpia! If you would like to lend support to this initiative or have further questions or comments, please email Ari, president of the Committee: ariul.arq@gmail.com.

Such good news, Mary Jo, that progress is being made on this. Can you give us an idea of the impact of this improvement on all the difficulties experienced during those crazy spring-time rains? Salads, Amiga. :O) | ------------------------Re: PLAYA LIMPIA SEWER UPDATE

I vote that all us Gringos (if that doesn't include the Canadians) or whatever the NTB folks are tax ourselves annually to pay to keep the sewer system functioning as well as possible. It seems the minor issue, storm water runoff, can't be mitigated, but we can certainly keep the pump running. It seems there is an entity, The Committee, that can handle funds and place them when and were necessary. Kudos to you guys for getting involved. As a part of this, those of you who can, but have not connected to the sewer would do so, that would help. It would also help if we (NTBs) would pay our water bills. Maybe we could get a list of those who have not paid and (like we do on social media NTB) and publicly shame them. (:o))) To pick a number, Ann and I will put in $2,000mx annually. Everything is connected to everything...... there is no such thing as a free lunch...... Mother Nature knows best. That said....... the fecal coliform count in the bay is 0.. but let's do what we can do to keep it that way. ps..... the more we pump up to the leach field, the more water (cleaned and filtered by all the sand) we will have in our aquifer. If Taminrando builds a big hotel, they will be pumping a LOT more water out of our aquifer.

Thanks for bringing up that Tamarindo water line Tim. Many new people to La Manzanilla might not realize or a lot of us have forgotten, out of sight out of mind, that Tamarindo was given a 12 inch diameter water line from La Manzanilla to their hotel and golf course 20 years ago and it runs 24/7/ 365 . It was in return for improved roads and infrastructure. We got to actually see it when the streets were improved. It was shocking!! What mitigations will La Manzanilla require from the new development company for using our main street for their access to their huge new project? There is no other easy access. I'm sure they expect to use "our" road as Tamarindo did 20 years ago. OR has anyone asked ??? Something to think about if La Manz is looking for money to help solve it's infrastructure problems. Negotiate??? | ------------------------Re: PLAYA LIMPIA SEWER UPDATE

When Ann and I first started coming to LM they were building the houses on the hill/cliff over looking Tamarindo. The brought in the huge Ibeams they used to anchor them in place. Trucks like that will tear the improved streets in LM. | ------------------------Re: PLAYA LIMPIA SEWER UPDATE

Mary Jo Many thanks for the Playa Limpia update and for posting the pictures -- it helps in understanding the current infrastructure and treatment systems that exist. I strongly endorse Tim's assertion of a voluntary levy paid by the foreign nationals who reside / "own" property in La Manz. Frankly, I look at my annual property tax and water bill in La Manz, compare to my NOB bills and, I am embarrassed. It takes money to safely operate a community. I would appreciate the opportunity to make directed contributions to the town's infrastructure. Jim | ------------------------HOW TO DONATE TO PLAYA LIMPIA INITIATIVE FUND
Posted by Davison Collins on July 17, 2015, 2:21 pm, in reply to "Re: PLAYA LIMPIA SEWER UPDATE"
Thanks, Mary Jo, for posting photos and summary of the most recent work accomplished. And thanks to everyone who has been helping out with the initiative--a special thanks to Lew Leibowitz who put in a lot of work on the 40-page Engineers Without Borders application! I applaud Tim and Jim for their progressive and generous offers to help support this initiative. For those interested in helping support the Playa Limpia Initiative, I am providing the options for doing so once again (I have provided the info. in previous "Playa Limpia" threads) in this thread: The "Playa Limpia Initiative" fund will be used to help cover infrastructure costs of repairing and maintaining the pump station and treatment tank in La Manzanilla, implementing constant water testing and bringing Engineers Without Borders to La Manzanilla asap to help solve our sewage system problem. After all those priorities are achieved, Tierralegre and the Playa Limpia Committee will seek international Blue Flag Certification for our beach (these items can be found at: Blue Flag Certification Page at: http://www.blueflag.org/menu/criteria/beaches. If you are interested in donating to the fund, you have a couple easy options listed below. NOTE: Make sure to earmark all donations for the “Playa Limpia Initiative.” 1. If you´d like to simply make a donation to this cause and are not worried about receiving a tax-deductible donation, then you can personally drop your donation by the Tierralegre office at María Asunción 49-A in front of Lidia´s Mini Market. Please get in touch with me first by e-mail or on my cell: (315) 104-5442, to make arrangements. 2. If you´d like to make a donation within Mexico and receive a Mexico tax-deductible receipt which is honored in Mexico and many other countries, then you can either drop it by the office following the instructions above or you can make a deposit directly to the Tierralegre Banamex account which is set up exclusively for this fund. In this case, the account number is: 8433582; the sucursal is: 7002; and the Clabe Interbancario is: 002385700684335826. Note that in kind donations are also accepted—e.g., water testing equipment, etc. (but check with us first to see if the in kind donation is something we can actually use for the cause). 3. If you'd like to make a US tax-deductible donation please visit our “Friends of Fund” page on the International Community Foundation website—where you will find various options, including paying with a credit card online, for donating—at Tierralegre´s "Friend of Fund" webpage: http://donate.icfdn.org/#npo/tierralegre-a-c Thank you in advance to all interested in donating for your support with this cause, and special thanks to those of you who have already donated. The fund currently has $13,500 pesos in it after this most recent infrastructure improvement cost. Any questions, please get in touch with me by e-mail or on my Mexican cell: (315) 104-5442, or my U.S. line: (865-230-7995) Together as a community we can insure that our beach and the surrounding aquatic ecosystems are clean, safe and sustainable for generations to come!
