Calzones gave a fair report on the municipal water supply last week (check the archive). It seems that by and large the fresh water supply is "relatively" safe, but testing methods and data have not been shown. It is certainly possible that plumes of contamination exist within the aquifer from various sources such as fosas (cess pits), waste oil dumping, graves, etc. The major blackwater concern is that the town sewer system is, at best, incomplete. Such as it does, it drains to the mangrove swamp. There is no treatment. And there are still many homes and businesses who have made really no provision for dealing with their blackwater. Some of it runs in the street, some of it pools in the street, and some of it is sprayed onto the street to dry. None of these techniques is safe or sanitary. Please join me in pressing for more information on water quality and for the development of a proper sewer system for La Manzanilla. We will all be healthier and happier for it.
