Origin of the word "Gringo"

Before we left La Manz, we had a spirited discussion with someone about the origin of the word "gringo" in the Spanish language. This word came over from Spain originally, although it is not used there anymore. Probably came from the word "griega", for greek. Some people seem convinced the word comes from a bastardization of the english words "green-go" - but this is obivously not correct.
