The only partly effective repellents (repelentes de insectos) available around here right now are OFF Extra Duracion and Autan (preferably their lotion version). Unfortunately neither work very well against jejenes (Mexican no-see-ums whose bite packs a punch). A 30% DEET solution is sold in Mexico by Ben's but we haven't seen it on the shelves anywhere for about a year. Your best bet is to bring your own DEET repellent with you. You won't regret it. Ben's is the most widely distributed, I think. Their small containers of 100% DEET (not for sale in Mexico) are very effective but a pain to use. More convenient would be something that you could spray on, but DEET is the only thing that works against the worst bugs. Citronella works too, but according to US government tests, its effectiveness lasts for no more than 15 to 20 minutes. DEET lasts up to 8 hours. We are on our last bottle and a half of Ben's Deep Forest 30% DEET and are starting to get worried about replacing it. |
