My understand that neutering dogs is castration. Why can't they be given vasectomies? If a dog had a vasectomy, he could still enjoy his attempts at mating, without the result creating little puppies.

I'll honestly would like opinions on this castration preference.

Thanks!

Mark, you're lucky you weren't here before Cisco's Amigos. There was rampant VD amongst the dog population with penises dripping blood. If the vasectomy procedure was done the way you suggest, there would be further spread of this disease. There used to be dying dogs in the streets, packs fighting at night, etc. In my opinion, it is much better for the dogs that are in La Manzanilla as they are living longer and most of them have homes and it is safer for them. I am going to go out on a limb here, but my observation is that people like puppies, but it's a different story as the dogs grow up and get into mischief. There may be a dog training class this year (not taught by me), so stay tuned everyone.

Norma, thank you very much for your very clear explanation of why castration is not an option.
Thank you

How great that there might be a dog training class coming up soon. I can think of a few at Cat Central who could use the course, including the growing black puppy who follows me home!

Norma: Thanks for the explanation, but I don't buy it. There are many, many male dogs here with testicles that do not emit blood from their penises, that are quite docile and sweet.

Certainly, if one smells a b###h in heat, he will act at he was born to act. They are also territorial, but that is also in their nature.

Human males oftentimes act territorial, fight in the streets, but no government that I know of imposes the penalty of castration upon them.

In all honesty, I think we castrate dogs so that are better, less troublesome pets. So, we castrate simply because it is in our desire that dogs are docile, and not the animals they were born to be.

Just my opinion.

My husband Patrick and I spent 15 years in Manzanillo before coming to LM last winter. I can not tell you how very pleasant it is to be returning to LM this coming winter and know there will not be packs of dogs, stray dogs, dogs in heat, humping dogs etc. etc. I feel very safe which I did not in Manzanillo.
We thought all of Mexico had the same dog problems until we discovered in LM a very responsible community and the wonderful program that was in place.
We definitely support Julie and her wonderful group of volunteers which we are now happily part of.

Dear Dee and Patrick,
Thank you for your continued support of Cisco's Amigos Clinics. Many that arrived within the last few years have no memory of what it was like walking down the streets of La Manz seeing sick, starving, malnourished dogs 17 years ago. Spend an afternoon in Cihuatlan walking the neighborhoods and I'm sure you'll see a few TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumors) victims walking around dripping blood . It's not a pretty sight.
To answer ROJO's question, yes we do keep track of male to female ratios and I'm proud to say that the % of males is greatly improving (65/35%). At the beginning it was a 90/10% female/male ratio.

After spaying and neutering over 4300 animals in 10 years I can honestly say Cisco's Amigos has made a huge difference.

As a note of clarification :
Melaque's "Pro Animal" campaign in association with the Mexican Central Salud should not be confused with Cisco's Amigos. We are totally different groups.

I don't think you have ever had a dog in Mexico have you Mark? Have you ever seen a pack of dogs attack some poor thing that doesn't belong to the pack? These folks have been involved with animals in Mexico for some time...you do not know the history or misery witnessed and yes, neutered dogs do make better pets even in Canada. I understand and respect what these experienced people are saying.

I, too, will raise my glass to Cisco's Amigos and the changes it, and similar organizations, has wrought along our wee bit of coastline. I recall the fornicating, scratching, fighting, bleeding swarm of dogs, the b###hes with their teats swinging so close to the ground from who-knows how many litters, and the puppies themselves, diseased, eyes streaming, some near barren of fur.
This was my first visit to Barra some 20 years ago. The scene of greatest horror was the premises of that hotel that has never been completed. That scene no longer exists.
The territorial bar-room brawlers of the human species hold no greater appeal for me, but they, at least, are able to seek medical help for themselves, unlike our four-legged friends whom we have domesticated and to whom we owe the debt of great care and love.

We were happy to attend several animals from La Manzanilla at our most recent 5-day Spay & Neuter Campaign. Thanks to everyone who came out to show their support for our efforts! We plan to have another 5-day campaign in April 2015.
