Evironment revisted

I would like to make one more attempt to address the serious environmental issues occurring here at Boca de Iguana. There are two issues.

1. The waste water that is being dumped into the mangrove from the unpermitted new campground there. The construction of the open septic system and the direct dumping of the showers waste water into the mangrove both of which are illegally positioned in the federal zone are threatening the entire ecosystem of the area. At times you can see human waste floating in the lagoon.

2. The vehicle traffic and parking that occurs daily and in abundance on the weekends is equally as damaging. Cars are destroying turtle nests, the bird life has been impacted drastically and the danger from speeding motorcycles and trucks is a real threat. The access which has always been a pedestrian access is now a virtual highway and at times a motorcycle race track. The law forbids the access to the beach by vehicles other than for emergency or authorized use. The problem is that the chain that used to be there has been removed along with all of the signage that was in place. In the past the concession people had the right to access the beach to ferry their supplies to and from their stands which is certainly a reasonable accommodation. Now however it is open season and it is getting worse daily.

What I would like to request is that those of you who agree there is a serious problem here make an effort to help and here is how you can do that.

A. Contact the Delegado in La Manzanilla and express your concerns. Although this is a La Huerta issue as well, it is the town of La Manzanilla that has the ability to enforce the law and they are the closest authority. The more people that express their concern the better our chances.

B. Call Profepa, the Federal Agency in charge of environmental issues and the federal zone and register your complaint. That number is 333-824-6508.

Finally I would like to say that I would request that everyone NOT RESPOND TO THIS POST.
For those who do not agree with this situation, you don't have to do anything. For those of you who do agree I am simply asking for action. I want to remain on focus here and prevent this from becoming another forum for unproductive and deflecting comments. This is a very serious issue and I hope the silent majority will indeed act.

Thanks,
Rick Gehweiler
