Well, I am that friend, and it was my fault that I neglected to plug my new computer into my usual foolproof system: a surge protector (strip) that is plugged into a voltage regulator (box) that is plugged into a grounded outlet.

On the other hand, I would like to boycott CFE until it does a better job of regulating those nasty power surges!

When do I get my earplugs? ;-)

Everyone should ALWAYS use a surge protector and a good one, especially in places prone to lightning, thunder and power failures. Better to spend the money on a good one that comes with insurance if it doesn't work, because, if you get fried, you're going to replace some equipment. I know. It happened to us. Our computers were fine but we lost our TV (not protected) and our hot tub controls ($1000.00 to replace). We use them on our computers and TVs.

If you get hit, you'll need to replace the surge protector, because it took the hit, and it's toast. Ours had an alarm that sounded, to let us know it had been hit.

Believe me, you want to hear that alarm!

Felipe at CompuPlus sells some pretty good surge protectors, if he still has them. Otherwise, order this one:

We decided to put a whole house surge protector on our main panel here in La Manz... And it has worked great. Available at Home Depot in Canada or the States.

Surge protection is a very involved subject and he in LM as in many other areas of Mexico, power is poorly regulated. Between the brown outs, poor grounds with in the house system and power spikes (surges), anything pluged in is subject to some very serious abuse. Cheap power bars are just that, cheap, and offer very little in the way of protection. The APC units are one of the better solutions but not the best, what you need to do is to if possible protect the entire house. As a commerical and industrial electrical contractor we installed many such systems for the protection of sensitive electronic equipment. We relayed exclusively on a company in Texas (Delta) which produced an excellent product and that was reasonably price.

Before you all rush out to purchase power bars, it is best that you understand what they can and can not do.

Go to their website and spend a couple minutes reading their technical specs, it might help you better understand what you need to look at when shopping for a solution to CFE's poor power supply.

I second that, Erin. Can't stress it enough.
