With respect to Mikey's post, that the law has absolutely nothing to do with the racism in Arizona -- I would point to the latest fascinating irrational act by Arizona -- banning ethnic studies (with the falsehood that the courses segregate students -- which, of course, is untrue, since anyone could take any class; not to mention that most educated/nonracist educators believe that it creates better citizenship when folks understand their heritage -- and the comparison to it of the best of American values -- fair play, equal treatment, respect for differences, etc.). White racists should get the message soon that actions like those of Arizona's will be long remembered by minority populations that will soon be (legally) in the majority. Now, is the time for the wingnuts in the Republican party to embrace tolerance, aggressive civics education, careful and attentive respect to the contribution immigrants make in the US -- or they will soon find themselves on the justified end of tit for tat. |
