For me Caleta de Campos is what I envision La Manzanilla was like before people like me got there. Well well worth a stop. The town itself is, um, "a work in progress," but it's on a gorgeous small swimming bay. Bring your Spanish, you'll need it. Friendly people, fishing pangas, couple of low-key palapa restaurants.

Cannot address the safety issue of Hwy 200 (b/c we have not been that way in several years). My guess it is much safer than the rumor mill would indicate.
