We drove the coast as far as Puerto Angel (I think that's the name) and then over the mountains to Oaxaca. This was in 2009. Beautiful drive. Many milatary check stops and we were searched a few times..but it was fine. The danger in my opinion was driving through Alcapulco with all the traffic trying to find the road we needed to continue on. I saw more car accidents on that trip than ever in my life. And driving over the mountain on that narrow winding road was an exciting and scary ride. You can't go fast because of all the switchbacks. I think 25 mph is about as fast as you can go. I think it took us 7 hrs to go 150 miles. So back to the coast drive...Yes, it's beautiful, we found many places to stay with no problems. Enjoy your trip!!
