We went to Manzanillo yesterday and were passed right through. Go figure.
6 or more years ago we were stopped at the road into the town of Agua Caliente and asked for our papers. We didn't have them. The military "official" got a little uptight with us so I asked for a phone to call the President of the Ejido in La Manzanilla. All questioning stopped and they passed us through. Later we were told by someone we feel knows the ins and outs of these check points and they told us that these guys have no authority to ask for papers they can only search for drugs and weapons. It's their way of being macho. What fun for a bunch of 19year olds carrying M16's!
In the 11 years of driving back and forth and stopped at many of these military check points only that once have we been asked for papers.
I think it's a good idea to carry copies(we do) of your passport and Fm3 but remember the media loves to insight fear- It sells more papers and clicks to their websights. What better news than severed heads!!!
