Sewage in La Manzanilla goes straight to the mangrove on a good day (for those who actually connected laterals to the main). During the rainy season when the mangrove is full the pipe cannot drain and so backs up. Several years ago there was a big push to install the new sewer lines and lift station before the streets were cobbled. The lift station was bypassed, sending the sewage to the mangrove as ever, and the lift pumps were never connected, nor electrified. I have a picture of a donkey grazing inside the lift station enclosure. I also have a picture of a Honda trash pump pumping raw sewage from the manhole in front of Palapa Joe's out onto the beach through the corridor. Furthermore, the aquifer beneath La Manzanilla/Los Ingenious is unquestionably contaminated. Tamarindo removes huge volumes of water illegally from the aquifer to water their eco-golf course, which then allows salt water (and sewer water) intrusion due to hydrostatic pressure. The contamination of the aquifer is compounded by some fosas dumping sewage directly into the water table (plop, plop, splash, splash). Proper sanitation does not exist in La Manzanilla, and the health consequences could be severe. It seems the locals lack any understanding of the principles involved, and the gringos lack the authority or the will to do anything about it. Get your shots. Drink bottled water. Wear shoes around town. And don't swim in the bay until Christmas.
